The Pittsburgh Steelers tight end situation just got a lot worse. A few days after being carted off of the Steelers practice field with an undisclosed injury, Steelers back up tight end Matt Spaeth has learned that he has a Lisfranc foot sprain. These are never injuries that are easy to come back from and it looks like Spaeth could miss some extended time.

From Gary Dulac of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette:

Spaeth was slated to start the season as the top tight end on the depth chart while Heath Miller continues to work his way off of the physically-unable to perform list following his major knee injury at the end of next year. There is no exact timetable for his return, so the Steelers desperately need to add more talent at the position.

If the season were to start today, the Steelers would roll David Paulson out as the starter. It’s a less than ideal situation for Pittsburgh, but it will have to do.
