The San Francisco 49ers first preseason game is in the books, a loss 10-6 to the Denver Broncos. The San Francisco 49ers need help at wide receiver desperately. Injuries have depleted their depth at the position and has forced Vernon Davis to practice with wide receivers in OTA’s and training camp.

The 49ers have hope though in 2012 first round draft pick A.J. Jenkins, un fortunately he hasn’t lived up to the selection. In Thursday night’s game he caught one pass for 11 yards. He fumbled once (and lost that fumble) and a pass intended for him was intercepted. He was targeted a total of 3 times.

“Uh, could have been better,” coach Jim Harbaugh said, via NFL.com. “We got work to do in areas. When you turn the ball over four times, offensively, you have work to do.”

Emerging leader Colin Kaepernick was seen talking to Jenkins on the field after the fumble.

“That you have to come out and make plays,” Kaepernick said via Comcast SportsNet Bay Area. “He is someone that we need to be able to rely on.”

Jenkins is trying to remain positive despite a poor showing. More importantly he is trying to avoid the “sky is falling” mentality.

“It’s the first preseason game. We have three more games left,” Jenkins said. “It’s a long year. No need to panic and get all discouraged. Just got to keep watching film.”
