Geno Smith did something in his first NFL game many Jets fans were afraid of – he hurt himself. Smith suffered a mild ankle sprain in the Jets’ loss against the Detroit Lions last night, 26-17. While taking a snap in the third quarter, the rookie quarter back rolled his ankle while scrambling, which is something Smith is used to doing pretty well from his days at West Virgnia. Lucky for Jets fans, his X-rays came up negative.
Geno Smith was forced to end his night fairly early, however he did complete six of seven passes for forty seven yards. He came into the game for Mark Sanchez, who played just three series for the Jets.
The quarterback battle has been heating up for the New York Jets this off season, with no clear person taking the lead. It’s been pretty back and forth all summer; some reports have said that Sanchez will be the starter, while other sources have said that Smith is the front runner for the job. It doesn’t look like this ankle injury will hinder Smith’s chances for the starting spot, as it isn’t a serious one.
The second preseason game for the Jets will come next Saturday, as they take on the Jacksonville Jaguars. If Smith can recover from the injury quickly, he could very well be the starter for the game. There has been no announcement from the team as to who will take the first snap behind center on Saturday, so fans will just have to wait and see how he rest of the week goes for Gang Green.
