The New York Jets quarterback competition may have just taken an interesting turn that could lead to the incumbent  Mark Sanchez retaining his starting QB role.

The NFL preseason debut for Geno Smith ended when he rolled his ankle during a rush to the sideline. The second-round pick from West Virginia limped off of the field and that was the end of his night as third-stringer Greg McElroy entered the game and played most of the remainder of the game vs. the Detroit Lions.

"“I was in complete disbelief,” Smith said. “Obviously in your first professional game, you don’t want to have injuries. I was just hoping it wasn’t anything significant.”"

Smith did also say after the game that he expects to play in the team’s next game.

The odds are favoring Sanchez more and more as the weeks go on, and he didn’t hurt his chances after finishing last night 10/13, with 125 yards and a touchdown, but did throw a pick-6 to defensive lineman Ezekial “Ziggy” Ansah.
