In New York Jets quarterback Mark Sanchez’s first series in the preseason he threw a pick-six interception. The craziest part of the interception might have been that it was to rookie pass rusher Ziggy Ansah, not a cornerback or safety.
Head coach Rex Ryan however wasn’t paying attention though and didn’t see the pick, just Ansah running into the end zone.
“I never saw it. I caught the tail end of it,” Rex Ryan told reporters, per ESPN New York.
The Jets have a quarterback competition on their hands and Geno Smith had to be smiling with that play. Like Mark Sanchez’s play however, Ryan didn’t see Smith’s performance either.
“I had my own issues on the other side, so I never really focused a whole lot while he was in there,” Ryan said. “We’ll see it on tape. You probably saw more plays than I did.”
It is hard to believe that the head coach wasn’t watching the game. It was just a preseason game and he was most likely worrying about defensive issues. That could be a sign of the faith he has in offensive coordinator Marty Mornhinweg. Having the games videotaped also makes it easier to focus on the defense and assess the offense later.
