Carrie Muskat tweeted that the Chicago Cubs will move right handed pitcher Carlos Villanueva back to the bullpen and recall Jake Arrieta.
Villanueva has had mixed results since he returned to the starting rotation and will now give Jake Arrieta a second chance with the major league club after spending some time at the Triple-A level for the Cubs.
The right hander is 2-8 this season with a 4.26 ERA through 15 starts. His last outing was against the St. Louis Cardinals, where he pitched 6 complete innings, giving up seven hits, four earned runs while striking out four in 6-5 win on Saturday.
Arrieta was acquired by the Cubs in a trade that sent catcher Steve Clevenger and starting pitcher Scott Feldman to the Orioles.
He is 2-2 with a 3.56 ERA and 39 strike outs with 16 walks in 30 1/3 innings over seven starts at Triple-A Iowa. In the Majors this season, Arrieta is a combined 1-2 with a 6.07 ERA in six starts with both the Baltimore Orioles and the Chicago Cubs.
With Villanueva back in the bullpen for the Cubbies, the starting rotation looks like the following. Travis Wood, Edwin Jackson, Jeff Samardzija, Jake Arrieta and Chris Rusin.
Arrieta will start Friday against the St. Louis Cardinals.
