The Washington Redskins back up quarterbacks are getting a lot of time under center this preseason. That is mainly due to the waiting game surrounding Robert Griffin III’s knee. There is still hope that RG3 is available for the season opener.
“I did talk with Dr. Andrews before the game,” Shanahan said after Monday night’s game, via the Washington Post. “He feels great about Robert’s progress.”
The Redskins will still hold RG3 out of preseason games.
“(Andrews) really feels the same as he did before camp with practice,” Shanahan said. “He feels good about him practicing. He doesn’t feel like we should put him in any (preseason) games. He’s going to re-evaluate him after the Tampa game and then he’ll make a decision, at least from his perspective, where he’s at. … If there is no setback, he thinks (RG3 will) be ready.”
“It could come up to the Sunday before (Week 1),” Griffin told ESPN. “There’s no rush. It’s just about us all being on the same page. And I already actually talked to (Andrews) and we met. He says everything looks good. We’ve just got to keep going from here.”
Andrews watched Griffin’s pregame work out.
“It felt good. I wanted him to see that. He needs to be here to see me,” Griffin said. “He’s been busy saving lives, kissing babies. He’s real impressed with what’s going on.”
Ultimately it is Dr. Andrews who will make the call on RG3.
“If Dr. Andrews felt that his knee wasn’t ready, we surely wouldn’t play him,” Shanahan said. “I don’t know what the communication was. I hate to make a comment on what hearsay is. I’m not exactly sure what was said. But we surely wouldn’t play him if we didn’t feel it was in the best interests of Robert and this organization to play him.”
