Ichiro reaches 4,000 hits
New York Yankees outfielder picked up the 4,000th hit of his baseball career on Wednesday night. In the first inning, Ichiro slashed an R.A. Dickey knuckleball, giving him his 4,000th career high.
It was the 2,772nd career hit in Major League Baseball. The rest of his hit came when he played in Japan.
The 39-year old Ichiro came to America in 2001 when he joined the Seattle Mariners. In his rookie season, he hit .350, had 242 hits and stole 59 bases, leading the league in each category. He went to be named American League Rookie of the Year and American League Most Valuable Player.
He was traded to the Yankees after playing 95 games for the Mariners last year. He spent the first 11 and a half years with the Mariners.
Before joining the Mariners back in 2001, he spent nine years with the Orix Blue Wave in the Japan Pacific League. After playing sparingly in his first two seasons with the Blue Wave, he never posted a batting average lower than .342 and never had less than 141 hits.
This season, Ichiro is batting .276.
