Montero, Chavez return for Diamondbacks
The Arizona Diamondbacks are barely in the race any more. They are 9.5 games behind the Los Angeles Dodgers in the NL West and are 7 games (6 in the loss column) behind the Cincinnati Reds for the second wild card spot.
If the Diamondbacks plan to make any kind of run, they’ll need some help and could begin to get it Monday night. According to Steve Gilbert, who covers the Diamondbacks for MLB.com, catcher Miguel Montero and infielder Eric Chavez are set to return from the disabled list.
Montero is batting .228 with an OBP of .316 and a slugging percentage of .345. Montero also has nine home runs and 34 RBI. Chavez has been excellent, batting .299 with an OBP of .343 and a slugging percentage of .526. He has nine home runs and 40 RBI.
To make room for Montero and Chavez, infielder Matt Davidson and catcher Tuffy Gosewisch have been sent back to the minors.
The Diamondbacks will send Brandon McCarthy (2-8, 5.44 ERA) to the mound against Tyson Ross (3-6, 2.85 ERA) and the San Diego Padres.
