Eduardo Nunez was supposed to replaced the injured Robinson Cano at second baseman for the Yankees, but Nunez has been scratched from the lineup.
Cano is listed as day-to-day after being hit by a pitch. Cano had to leave yesterday’s 7-1 Yankees victory over the Toronto Blue Jays after being hit by Blue Jays pitcher J.A. Happ in the first inning.
“It’s swollen right now, and the last thing you want to do is aggravate it,” Cano said.
According to Andy McCollough of the New Jersey Star-Ledger, Nunez “can’t go” and Mark Reynolds will start at second.
As Craig Calcaterra of NBC Sports’ Hardball Talk points out, Reynolds was a disaster at third base. He wound up having to DH and play first base with the Baltimore Orioles and Cleveland Indians over the last few seasons. Calcaterra also points out Reynolds has played one inning of second base this year and before that, hadn’t played the position since 2007.
Reynolds is hitting .214 with 17 home runs and 53 RBI on the season.
