Chicago Cubs gold glove second baseman Darwin Barney isn’t in the lineup today against the Pittsburgh Pirates.
Don’t worry, it’s nothing serious, the man just needs a breather. Barney has started in 136 games for the Cubs this season so he’s picking up a well deserved day off. This season his fielding stats fell off just a tad, maybe just a sliver.
Last years numbers of a .997 fielding percentage with 311 put outs and two errors through 146 games started allowed him to take the gold glove away from Cincinnati Reds second baseman Brandon Phillips.
This season Barney is hoping to be a gold glove repeat with 234 put outs and four errors with a fielding percentage of .993.
As for batting, Barney has seven home runs, 24 doubles with 41 RBI’s under his belt with a batting line of .209/.268/.305 in nearly 500 at-bats.
Not sure what this team will do with Barney when prospect Javier Baez is ready to be called up to the majors, hopefully they don’t trade him away. He’s an amazing defensive player but Baez looks like he’s able to offer the Cubs the best of both worlds.
Yeah, I just Hannah Montana’d that last sentence.
