The Detroit Lions have announced via their twitter that wide receiver Calvin Johnson will start today.

That is good news for fantasy owners everywhere. Whether he’ll play every down or in a limited role is still unknown and we won’t probably know until the first couple of series. There were reports that the Lions might use Johnson on third downs and red zone plays only. Saying that he’ll start though certainly seems to indicate that he’ll be playing in a full capacity and not a limited role, other wise they would’ve specified it.

Johnson might not want to play in a limited role and force his way on the field. If the Lions get an early lead or big lead at some point he might begin to play less.

For fantasy owners it’d be hard to decide whether to sit him. Knowing that the Lions are considering using him in red zone situations at least, he might be worth starting depending on your league and point structure.

[UPDATE 11:54]: The Lions won’t restrict Calvin Johnson.
