Former UFC light heavyweight champion Lyoto Machida was successful in his middleweight debut over the weekend, which left many people wondering when Machida’s next fight would take place and who the opponent would be.
If UFC president Dana White is able to get his wish, it looks like Machida could be matched up against a fellow Brazilian, Vitor Belfort, with a shot at the title on the line.
“I think, and I’m just talking here as a fan, not as a promoter, I think a lot of people want to see him and Vitor Belfort,” said White, via MMAJunkie. “That would be a fun fight. Vitor’s got to win down in Brazil. And who knows, he could fight someone else before that. But I’m just saying, as a fan, and speaking for many fans, that’s the fight they want to see. At least that’s what everyone was screaming at me on the way out of the arena tonight.”
Machida vs. Belfort would be a very intriguing and exciting match up that would bolster and potentially headline any card in the future, so White should be hoping that Belfort is successful in his next octagon appearance so that the fight can happen.
