The Denver Broncos are trying to beat the Kansas City Chiefs and give them their first loss of the season. There were some doubts and concern about whether Broncos quarterback Peyton Manning would be available for the game. Manning has been battling an ankle injury that was aggravated against the San Diego Chargers.
“I’m pretty sore,” Manning said after the game. “They kind of got me twice in kind of that lower area.”
Interim head coach Jack Del Rio was optimistic that Manning would play this weekend.
“(Manning) will definitely play this week so that’s good news,” said Del Rio. “We’re definitely on high alert in wanting to protect our quarterback. We didn’t do it as well as we could (against San Diego), and we have an even greater challenge this week in the team that’s sacked quarterbacks more than anyone in this league.”
They had good reason to be on high alert too based on comments the Chiefs’ Derrick Johnson made.
“You’ve got to get pressure in his face,” said inside linebacker Derrick Johnson, via The Kansas City Star. “He doesn’t get flustered much. But somehow you have to affect him. Is it disguising by the defensive end or playing a certain coverage, or showing something and playing a different scheme?
“He’s not very mobile, and people haven’t gotten to him that much … but when you get there, you’ve got to do some damage.”
So Manning is supporting a lot of bandage and support on his ankle.
