The nightmare season for the injury-decimated Florida Gators continued on Saturday. Facing the Georgia Southern Eagles from the FCS, the Gators, unable to score on the final play of the game, lost 26-20. It’s the sixth loss in the row for the Florida Gators, who are now a disappointing 4-7 on the year. It was the last game of the season for Georgia Southern. The Eagles finished 2013 with a 7-4 record.
The Eagles didn’t gain a single yard through the air on Saturday, and they didn’t need to. Led by senior Jerick McKinnon, who finished the game with 125 yards and a touchdown on a mere nine carries, Georgia Southern racked up a whopping 429 yards on the ground. Freshman Kevin Ellison also had a big day for the Eagles, rushing for 118 yards and two scores. William Banks, a senior, fell six yards short of being the third Georgia Southern player to top 100 yards rushing on the day, chipping in a touchdown himself.
The Gators will have a chance to end their disastrous season on a high note when they take on the Florida State Seminoles next weekend. An upset in the rivalry game would go a long way towards helping alleviate the frustration the Gators have felt in 2013.
