Brazil is set to host the World Cup this summer. While finishing up a stadium set to host the opener, a crane putting the final truss of the east stand into place collapsed and resulted in reportedly three people losing their lives, though there were reports that it was two.
According to military police, the crane collapsed because the soil underneath it gave way.
“The directors [of the club] profoundly lament the accident that occurred at the Arena,” Corinthians statement on accident at stadium read.
Aside from the tragic loss of life, it is a huge blow to Brazil. FIFA had given a December deadline to complete the stadium.
