Jim Caldwell’s staff with the Detroit Lions is starting to fill out with potentially brilliant under-the-radar hires. After coming into the job last week, the former Baltimore Ravens offensive coordinator has named the next Detroit Lions offensive coordinator on Tuesday. According to ESPN’s Christ Mortensen, the Lions have hired former New Orleans quarterback coach Joe Lombardi.

As Mort pointed out, Lombardi indeed comes from the linage of legendary Green Bay Packers head coach Vince Lombardi but the Lions will benefit more from what Lombardi has done in his career rather than who he’s related to. Lombardi worked with Drew Brees and Sean Payton in New Orleans and that right there is enough to make a lot of people intrigued by the hire.

While it’s an under-the-radar hire for the Lions, having a guy who worked with Drew Brees transferring knowledge to Matthew Stafford can only be a good thing. The Lions haven’t made splashy hires, but they appear to be making smart ones and Lombardi is the latest example of that.
