The Detroit Lions looked poised to make a run at the Super Bowl this year before the wheels fell off late in their season, prompting the firing of Jim Schwartz. One of the more disappointing aspects of the season was the poor play of Matthew Stafford late in the year, something that Jim Caldwell and Joe Lombardi will be looking to change.

One guy pulling for Stafford is NFL legend Joe Namath. Speaking at the Super Bowl this weekend, Namath praised the Lions quarterback and stated that he’d want Stafford on his team. Another legend high on Stafford is Hall of Fame Bills quarterback Jim Kelly, who also extended a massive compliment Stafford’s way, saying that he thinks he’s one of the best in the game today.

Per the Detroit Free Press:

"“He’s amazing,” former Buffalo Bills quarterback Jim Kelly said. “He does, he’s got everything you want as a quarterback. He’s got the arm, he’s got it all. He just needs to get more players around him and I think he’ll do all right. I mean, as an offensive system, he’s put up the numbers, but you need the whole package. You need special teams and defense to be able to complement that. They’ve had it at times, but it’s got to be consistent.”"

The Lions can only hope that Stafford develops and lives up to the praise that Namath and Kelly showered on him, as another lost season could greatly diminish the legacy of Stafford in the eyes of NFL icons and fans everywhere.
