The San Francisco 49ers made a lot of fans scratch their heads when it was rumored they wouldn’t be playing any primetime games in the inaugural year of their new luxurious stadium, but fans seem happy to just be getting a new stadium.
While at least eight home games will take place in Levi’s Stadium, the San Francisco Chronicle is reporting that the first game in the new stadium will kickoff in week two of the 2014 season — and it will be a Sunday night game on NBC.
"The $1.2 billion stadium is expected to be completed by late July, but the decision to delay its regular-season unveiling was made as part of its original construction schedule. The first regular-season game at Levi’s Stadium is expected to be a Sunday night contest on Sept. 14."
No opponent has been scheduled yet, but that information will come out with the schedule release in the spring. For now though, fans can rest assured that not only will the 49ers be getting a primetime game in 2014, their first one will be christening the new stadium the team just built.
