NFL Rumors: Alterraun Verner not open to hometown discount for Tennessee Titans
By Josh Hill
When the Tennessee Titans didn’t use their franchise tag on Pro Bowl cornerback Alterraun Verner this week, they were allowing him to hit free agent waters and now risk losing him to another team (See: Minnesota Vikings). But while the team didn’t give Verner the much hated tag, that apparently didn’t help them earn any brownie points with him as it looks as though a hometown discount for Verner won’t be coming.
According to Jim Wyatt of the Nashville Tennessean, Verner isn’t completely closed off to the idea of taking a hometown discount, but he’s also not jumping through hoops for anyone this free agency.
"“I guess you could say it exists, and it doesn’t exist. I love being here, I love my teammates and I love Tennessee. When it comes to the money, it is not like I need to be paid super high. But I am not going to be a fool and take anything that is super small. From a business standpoint, you don’t know how long you are going to play in this league, so you have to take advantage when you can.”"
Verner went on to day that he’s not going to stiff the Titans on purpose, but he also doesn’t want them to break the bank to bring I’m back.
It’s a situation to monitor, but Vernerrefuisng the hometown discount clearly isn’t coming from a vindictive place and it’s also not a final decision.
