The Pittsburgh Steelers are releasing outside linebacker and former second round pick LaMarr Woodley according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter and will designate him a post June 1 cut.

Woodley averaged 11 sacks per season from his outside linebacker spot in the Steeler’s 3-4 defense, but his production has dropped off in each of the past two seasons when he recorded four and five sacks in 2012 and 2013, respectively.
Woodley became expendable when the team placed the transition tag on Jason Worilds and selected Jarvis Jones in the first round of the 2013 draft. Jones didn’t produce like he did when he was a sack monster with the Georgia Bulldogs, but the Steelers track record of developing 3-4 outside linebackers is nothing short of brilliant.
Woodley likely won’t be on the street long as players who can get to the quarterback are snatched up in free agency in a hurry and Woodley can still do that.
