Duke coach Mike Krzyzewski doesn’t get called out often, and when he does, there is generally good reason. But in today’s ACC Championship game, Coach K was given a technical foul for throwing a pen at the floor (no, really, he was). In response, the Krzyzewski said being T’d up was ”absolutely ridiculous” and ”shameful.”
So how does he really feel? I hate wishy-washy coaches.
The whole thing was a rather innocuous scene that took place during a Duke timeout with 2:07 left in the first half. As the Blue Devils came out of their team huddle, Krzyzewski decided he was fed up with his writing implement, and tossed it to the floor where it bounced into associate head coach Steve Wojciechowski’s leg.
The whistle blew, Coach K was hit with the technical, and eventually Virginia went on to win the game 72-63.
"”I didn’t do it in reaction to anything. I mean, I could hit my head on the floor. I can do a handstand. I can tumble. As long as it’s not in reaction to anybody. There’s no way that there should be a technical foul on that. I mean, it was ridiculous. Absolutely ridiculous. Shameful. Shameful.” – Coach K on technical foul call [Source: SI.com]"
It’s easy to understand why Krzyzewski is annoyed, but given the end result of the game, the technical fouls really had little to do with the outcome…particularly since it happened as the first half was expiring. And the rules of postseason play on national television might be a little more strict when it comes to what you can and can’t do in view of the cameras.
No pens were injured in the filing of this story.
