Ravens’ Steve Smith fine with being a ‘complementary dude’
By Mike Dyce
The Carolina Panthers let Steve Smith go and he has since signed with the Baltimore Ravens. He won’t be stepping in looking to establish himself as the No. 1 wide out in the Ravens’ offense, he has picked out a role he wants to play from offensive coordinator Gary Kubiak’s system from when he was the head coach of the Houston Texans.
“I don’t see myself in Coach Kubiak’s system like [Texans wide receiver] Andre Johnson],” Smith said, via the Ravens’ website. “I see the complementary dude of [former Texans wide receiver] Kevin Walter.
“I see how he contributed and how he was instrumental in getting Andre the ball but also getting his own opportunities.”
Walter had 41 catches for 518 yards and two touchdowns in 2013. Smith by comparison caught 64 passes for 745 yards and four touchdowns. Smith in a complimentary role could certainly help free up a receiver to play the role of a No. 1.
