Beer Review Of The Week:

Samuel Smith’s Nut Brown Ale

Samuel Smith’s Oatmeal Stout is one of my all time favorite beers, period. The Samuel Smith Brewery is one of the oldest in England and their stout is legendary. I’m also a big fan of brown ales so I’m not sure why it’s taken me so long to try this beer, but I wish I’d tried it sooner. It’s very good. It’s very smooth, malty, nutty, with just a touch of caramel, toffee, and some dry hop bitterness. For some people what I’m about to recommend will sound crazy, but for a brown ale like this one I recommend drinking it slightly warmer than a regular beer, not room temperature, but just slightly chilled instead of ice cold. On some darker beers like stouts and brown ales an “ice cold” beer sometimes mutes the flavor, but if you allow the beer to warm up slightly you get a much fuller flavor. Try it once, if you don’t like it then go back to drinking it ice cold. After all, there is no wrong opinion when it comes to beer, whatever you like is what you should drink. If you like a smooth and malty nut brown ale, try Samuel Smith’s Nut Brown Ale. You won’t be disappointed.

My Rating (1-10): 9

A Way To Pass The Time This Week:

This is a pretty easy one. I love the NFL, I miss the NFL, I’m having severe football withdrawal at this point. However, the first weekend of March Madness is one of the best weekends in sports and I’m not even a huge basketball fan. So while it isn’t football, sit back and enjoy one of the best sporting events on the planet this weekend. Make a day of it. Camp out in front of the TV with some good food and drink. Also, living in the greater Wichita area, I would be remiss if I didn’t take this opportunity to say GO SHOCKERS!!!! PLAY ANGRY!!!!!

Rant Of The Week:

You’ll have to excuse me this week because I’m having a real “old man”/”get off my lawn” type moment here. What in the world is up with the prices of toys? What an incredible rip off. I took my kids to Toys R US today and was just dumbfounded. My six year old daughter had a $3 birthday coupon she got in the mail (nice of them) so we told her she could pick out something little around $6. Good luck with that! Even the smallest little tiny figures that look like something you’d pull out of a Happy Meal are like $8-10. My son had some of his own money to spend. He loves the Lego movie and wanted to buy a couple of Lego figures from the movie. They were $4 each! For a little one inch tall plastic Lego man. No blocks, nothing to build, just the little Lego man all by himself, for $4. I’m pretty sure back in my day I could have bought a He-Man action figure for that price that could have literally terrorized a village of Lego men like some kind of Godzilla movie. I can’t even imagine what the cost of toys will be when I have grandchildren some day. I’ll have to put off retirement an extra year just to be able to buy them a Lego man. Geesh!

Alright, that’s it for this week. Let me know what you think about the draft pick analysis and if it changed your thoughts on what the teams at the top of the draft should do this year. Enjoy some March Madness and I’ll be back with more Armchair Quarterback again next week.
