The Toronto Blue Jays want to prove that their splashy moves before 2013 were substantive and worthwhile. In order for that to happen in 2014, they need shortstop Jose Reyes to stay healthy.

Reyes expressed optimism earlier this off-season about how he felt as he prepared for the season. In order for those good vibes to ring true, he and the Blue Jays will have to hope that the tight hamstring that pulled him from Saturday’s game is nothing more than a minor hitch in the final days of Spring Training.

Gregor Chisholm of MLB.com reports that the team considers Reyes day to day:

"Toronto’s shortstop attempted to downplay the incident by saying it was precautionary and didn’t think it was a big deal. There’s no immediate timeframe for his return to the lineup, but Reyes appears to be considered day to day.”"

Reyes impressed in 93 games last season, batting .296/.353/.427 with a 113 OPS+. The concern, of course, is how Reyes and his history of injuries will hold up while he plays half of his games on the artificial turf of the Rogers Centre.

The Blue Jays have a lot of questions entering the season, particularly in the starting rotation and at second base. They cannot afford to also have this injury linger into the season, so they will hope to see Reyes back in action in advance of Opening Day.
