It is not every day that a departing NFL player gets a congressman to issue a statement after his release from the state’s team. It is even less likely that the statement comes in the form of an endorsement for a player that supposedly has gang ties. But that is exactly what happened.

On Friday, Congressman Chaka Fattah (PA-02) issued the following statement on DeSean Jackson, who apparently was in need of some references as he goes shopping for a new team.

"“I was honored to have known and worked with DeSean Jackson throughout his successful career with the Eagles and I am sad to see him go. His contributions both on and off the field were immense—especially his work through The DeSean Jackson Foundation for Pancreatic Cancer. I will continue to be a proud fan and wish him the best of luck in the NFL.”"

It has been reported that a number of different teams are taking a serious look at Jackson and his off-the-field activities and relationships before opening their wallets. Not too sure an endorsement from a congressman holds any water in that arena, but I guess it couldn’t hurt – depending on who the congressman is of curse
