As the San Antonio Spurs wind down their regular season and sit out their grizzled veterans, youngsters like Danny Green are set to inherit a bigger role.
In today’s edition of “All Wired Up”, I’ll delve into the fantasy strengths of Green and I’ll also mention, that if you didn’t take my advice from Wednesday and grab Corey Brewer, make sure you grab him now after his 51 points, six steal explosion on Friday.
» Danny Green, SG/SF, San Antonio Spurs (44.4 percent owned on ESPN.com)
33 points (12-17 FG, 2-4 FT), 7 three-pointers, 4 rebounds, 2 assists, 0 steals, 1 block vs Suns.
After his white-hot NBA Finals’ display last season, many pundits were predicting huge things from Danny Green this season. But to say his season started off somewhat slowly would qualify for the understatement of the year awards.
Green’s scoring was off that much, that despite averaging 12.1 points a game over the last month, his season average still sits below 10 — 9.1 points per game to be exact.
That sort of putrid shooting lead Green to be dropped in all manner of leagues. But as often happens, fantasy owners overreact when the scoring dries up. Despite the fact that Green is averaging less than double digits for the season, he is Basketball Monster.com’s 78th ranked player. He is able to be ranked that highly because of his other contributions.
Green is averaging 1.9 three-pointers, 3.3 rebounds, 1.6 assists, 1.0 steals and 0.9 blocks and those defensive numbers in articular, make Green a viable fantasy player. It’s not easy to get a block a game from a shooting guard, so when you do you need to cherish it.
But that’s not the entirety of the Danny Green story. Over the past week, he’s turned things up more than a few notches.
He’s averaging 15.5 points, 3.3 three-pointers, 3.3 rebounds, 2.0 assists and 1.0 steals on 55 percent shooting. He’s also amassed 12 triples in the past two games for a total of 48 points.
Green has missed 12 games this season with various injuries and there’s always a possibility he gets included in coach Gregg Popovich’s resting schedule, but I envisage Green having a bit impact in the season’s waning moments. If you desperately need some threes, points, steals or blocks, Green will be a fantastic addition to your team.
