The Carolina Panthers released veteran wide receiver Steve Smith earlier in the season, which has left them without any real wide receiving threats on the outside. Because of that, running back DeAngelo Williams believes his value has skyrocketed, especially in fantasy football.

In what appears to be a light-hearted comment, Williams said that he believes he should now be a first-round pick in fantasy drafts for the upcoming season.

“I joked with people that my fantasy value went up after we got rid of our four receivers, but it’s the truth,” Williams said, via the Charlotte Observer. “I went from probably being drafted in the fifth and sixth round to being in the first round, me and Jonathan (Stewart) alike because we have no receivers.”

It is funny to see Williams blatantly blasting the current group of receivers on the Panthers roster, but he’s thinking like anyone out there covering the league.

When your top wide receivers are Jerricho Cotchery and Jason Avant, you have every right to believe that you will be called on to carry the offense. It is just rare that you get a player to be so open and honest in their evaluation of the team’s roster.
