We have now had two college players call out major media members in the past 24 hours over reports about them they are claiming as false. Just hours after Ohio State defensive back Bradley Roby claimed all reports about his alleged arrest for drunk driving were false, Auburn running back Tre Mason was quick to thwart a report that he needs wrist surgery this offseason.
NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reported that Mason was a surprise name to show up at the medical check in Indianapolis for the combine, and that the Heisman finalist needed wrist surgery. While the report noted that Mason would be ready for the preseason, that didn’t stop the man himself from firing back at Rapoport’s report.
The original report:
Combine exams revealed #Auburn RB Tre Mason had a bone in his wrist that wasn’t healing properly. Needs surgery, knocks him out of OTAs, etc
— Ian Rapoport (@RapSheet) April 25, 2014
And the response it promoted from Mason, who then heard back from Rapoport:
False information, I WILL NOT be having any surgery to anything on my body!
— Tre Mason (@TreMason) April 25, 2014
Teams have been informed differently. RT @TreMason21: @RapSheet this is false and DO NOT need any type of surgery!
— Ian Rapoport (@RapSheet) April 25, 2014
This is an interesting development for Mason as it’s not unclear if his wrist is injured or not. While he’s saying his wrist is fine, Rapoport is trying to tell him that his wrist isn’t.
It’s hard to say who we should believe here but both have motives to be correct. Rapoport is fighting for a scoop while Mason is fighting to ensure his stock doesn’t take a hit.
