San Diego Padres call up infielder Jace Peterson
By David Miniel
The San Diego Padres have placed third baseman Chase Headley on the 15-day disabled list due to a right calf strain and will be out for at least two-three weeks.
So with the Padres placing Headley on the disabled list, they needed to make some corresponding moves in order to add the depth that the need while he’s absent. With that being said, the San Diego Padres have purchased the contract of infielder Jace Peterson from Double-A San Antonio.
Peterson was on the Major League roster during Spring Training. He finished with 31 at bats, five hits, one RBI, five walks, six strikeouts on a batting line of .161/.278/.258.
Now with Peterson coming up, the Padres have optioned utility man Tommy Medica to Triple-A El Paso. This may not last long, as he should be getting another shot with the Major League club later on this year.
Right-hander Kevin Quackenbush will also be called up from San Diego’s farm system as he’s expected to pick up some middle relief work while with the Padres.
Update: Padres designate Alex Castellanos for assignment. This is the third time he’s been designated for assignment since last season. Tough break, but he could have the option of becoming a free agent.
Right-handed pitcher Josh Johnson was moved from the 15-day disabled list to the 60-day disabled list. This was a move that was made to make some room on the 40-man roster as Johnson underwent Tommy John surgery just yesterday.
He’s got a long road to recovery ahead of him.
