The Los Angeles Lakers may not have wanted to fired Mike D’Antoni but there won’t likely be any tears shed over the fact that he resigned his position as head coach on Wednesday night. Now that the D’Antoni era has come to an end in LA, the Lakers are on to their fourth coach since 2011 and there’s going to be an emphasis on making things work this time around.

Of all the names floating around coaching circles, one name keeps popping up without much resistance and that’s Derek Fisher. He’s still playing in the NBA but there’s a growing belief that he will go the Jason Kidd route and become a head coach the year after he retires.

Adrian Wojnarowski brings up this scenario thanks to what he’s been hearing from those close to Fisher.

The Lakers aren’t Fisher’s only option as a head coach and he may not even retire to pursue a post-playing career until 2015. Oklahoma City may end up firing Scott Brooks at the end of the season which could open up a spot for Fisher to take over there, but all of this is continent on the fact that Fisher needs to first retire and then actively express a desire to coach.

The latter seems to be true when it comes to Fisher and the Lakers as he’s evolving from being a dark horse candidate to a legitimate contender for almost any job that opens.
