Reds Place LHP Tony Cingrani On Disabled List

The Cincinnati Reds have placed pitcher Tony Cingrani on the 15 day disabled list with shoulder tendinitis.  For those of you that watched the game against the Cubs on Wednesday, something sure did not seem right.  His fastball never reached 90, and the Cubs treated him like he was throwing batting practice.  Cingrani lasted just four innings, giving up six hits, two walks, and three earned runs.

RHP Curtis Partch has been recalled from Louisville to take Cingrani’s roster spot.  Partch will likely take over the fifth starter spot for the Reds.  There is no timetable for Cingrani’s return yet, but the general opinion is that he will be out for longer than the minimum.  Mat Latos is scheduled to return sometime in the next couple of weeks.  Depending on Latos’ return date, Partch may not even get to make a start.  The Reds shouldn’t need a fifth starter until after Latos returns as long as he doesn’t suffer a setback.

Cingrani was 2-2 with a 2.86 ERA and 30 strikeouts in 28.1 innings before Wednesday’s subpar outing.  This kind of production will be hard for the Reds to duplicate.

The Reds are in desperate need of good news, so here is a bit: Aroldis Chapman was clocked at 101 mph in a rehab appearance yesterday.  His return should happen within the next couple of days.

In other news, the New York Mets have activated OF Juan Lagares from the 15 day disabled list and optioned Kirk Nieuwenhuis to AAA Buffalo.  Lagares could find at-bats hard to come by, at least in the short term with Chris Young playing pretty well.

The Orioles finally got to activate 3B Manny Machado today after two straight rainouts.  They optioned INF Steve Lombardozzi to AAA Norfolk.  Machado went 0-3 in his return to the lineup.  The Orioles may elect to be cautious with Macahdo in the short term, giving him a few more days off until he gets back to full strength.
