The PGA Tour heads to the famous TPC Sawgrass for what some call the fifth major at the PLAYERS Championship. The star-studded field always makes for a great challenge for fantasy golf since there’s such a deep pool to pick from. It’s a great week to fill your roster with your favorites and enjoy a great week of golf on one of the most recognizable courses in the world.
Last week, J.B. Holmes edged out the field to get the win and helped the “Harbour Dogs” take the win for the week in our 50-member FanSided & Friends group (if you want to join, check out the details here ). The Dogs also surged to the top of our spring segment standings and took over the overall lead for the season as well.
Heres who I have on my roster for this week at TPC Sawgrass:
Matt Kuchar: Kuchar has been one of my favorites personally and as a fantasy pick over the last two seasons (and no not just because he wears a Red Sox logo on his cap from time to time). He won the Heritage in his last start and has four straight top-5 finishes. He’s already finished in the top ten eight times this season in 11 tournaments (including the wraparound to last fall). When you add all that to his solid history at TPC Sawgrass including a win in 2012, Kuchar is a great pick to roster this week.
Luke Donald: Donald is coming off his runner-up at Harbour Town where Kuchar edged him to win the Heritage. It was his third top-ten in his last six events dating back to the Honda classic two months ago. Donald gets my nod in this spot mostly due to his history at Sawgrass where he’s been in the top 20 the last three years and has never missed a cut in seven trips to the tournament.
Rory McIlroy: Rory continues to crank out solid finishes and seems to be nearing a breakthrough for his first win on the PGA Tour this season. Last week, he finished t8 matching his finish at Augusta and at the PLAYERS last season. Rory’s always a good pick and can win any tournament where he realized his potential over all four rounds.
Jim Furyk: Furyk is on fire lately although he hasn’t gotten a win yet this season. He hasn’t finished outside the top 20 since the Cadillac Championship in early March and is coming off a solo second when he was on my roster last week at Quail Hollow. Furyk’s good form should continue this week as he comes to TPC Sawgrass where he has eight top-25 finishes in his career.
Jordan Spieth: In contrast to Furyk, Spieth has zero top-25’s in his career at TPC Sawgrass since this will be his first trip to the event. They youngster won’t be intimidated, though, coming off eight top 20’s in his last 10 starts on tour highlighted by a t2 at the Masters. Spieth is a phenom, so don’t let his first-timer status scare you away.
Brendon de Jonge: I’m taking a little bit of flier on de Jonge in my final spot on the B-List after his big turnaround last week (detailed by Bernie D’Amato ). He battled back from a 80 to finish t6 last week and has a good history at Sawgrass including a pair of top-15 finishes the last two years. Martin Laird is another sleeper I really like in this spot, but I’ll go with de Jonge.
Jimmy Walker: Walker had a disappointing week last week at Quail Hollow where he missed the cut, but he should be a contender this week as he has been in just about every other tournament this season. Before last week, he had seven straight top 25’s and three wins on tour this season, and I think he’ll bounce back and have a solid week at the PLAYERS.
Sergio Garcia: Garcia is on the leaderboard every year at TPC Sawgrass it seems including the year he won in 2008. He has made the cut in each of his last ten trips to the event and finished t8 last year.
