Digital Download push takes a hit with MLB The Show

As both Sony and Microsoft now have next gen console on the market boasting massive storage spaces, the trend pushing for digital media has only grown.  Backed largely by the ease of accesibility feature, digital downloads have been seemingly well accepted by most, but what happens when they aren’t?

Tuesday saw the release of MLB The Show 14 on Playstation 4, completely fall off the wheels.  With a promised release of 12:01 AM EST for preordered digital copies, the game not only failed to be available on time, but also for hours later.

As noted all over Twitter, the game wasn’t accessible for download until roughly 2:30 PM EST.  With the game requiring a 42 GB download, the playability of The Show was halted even further.

MLB The Show and Sony’s mishap with the digital download yesterday beg the question; Where do you stand with digital downloads?  Are there still consumers out there that appreciate a tangible product in return for their cash.  How important is resale of the ability to borrow media?  Is the convenience of cloud storage and purchasing media from the comfort of your couch enough to ignore the hiccups in the future?

Only time will answer these questions, but with the industry as a whole moving towards digital media, MLB The Show 14’s launch provides a crash course in how to go about a more fluid future release.
