Orioles’ Matt Wieters Will Not Need Surgery and other news

Whenever a player and Dr. James Andrews are mentioned in the same sentence, it is never a good thing.  Dr. Andrews spent a day poring over the MRI of Orioles catcher Matt Wieters’ right elbow.  He came to a conclusion that you rarely hear: Wieters will not need Tommy John surgery for his partial UCL tear in his left elbow.  Andrews advised rest for Wieters.

Manager Buck Showalter has obliged, sitting Wieters for tonight’s game against the Rays in Tampa.  Showalter has hinted the Wieters will be in the lineup tomorrow.  Newly recalled Caleb Joseph will get the start in his place.  Showalter has said that Matt Wieters will man the DH spot for the near future, meaning less at-bats for Steven Pearce and Delmon Young.

Owners of Wieters don’t care where he plays, just as long as he keeps hitting.  He is second among catchers in ESPN’s player rankings.  Steve Clevenger and Caleb Joseph will be the replacements for Wieters at catcher until his elbow heals.  They are worth an add in two catcher or AL-only leagues.  Standard league players should not be that desperate.

In other news, Kansas City Royals OF Lorenzo Cain is back in action.  Cain is 4-8  since his return, and could be a nice pickup for those of you in need of steals in all leagues.  He can be added in all deep leagues regardless of your needs.  He should provide solid production at the top of the Royals lineup.

The Chicago White Sox have reinstated 3B Conor Gillaspie from the disabled list.  Gillaspie was hitting .302 with eight runs scored and 12 RBI when he got hurt.  For those of you in deep leagues in need of average and runs help, he is worth adding.  He won’t give you much for power or speed though.

The Texas Rangers have added veteran Scott Baker to their bullpen.  Baker has just four career relief appearances, but will look to provide long relief help in their ‘pen.  Baker is 63-48 with a 4.14 ERA in his career.  Baker likely will not be a factor in any leagues.  At least not yet.  Baker has never been a big strikeout pitcher, so he likely won’t provide help there either.
