Upon immediate “release” from the Indiana Pacers, it was revealed by the Indy Star that the club never gave oft-injured center Andrew Bynum a physical prior to signing him to the roster”
"The Pacers, who did not administer a physical to Bynum until after he signed the contract, entered this relationship with high hopes. At times, however, players and coaches tempered their excitement due to Bynum’s long history of health issues.via Andrew Bynum no longer with Indiana Pacers | Indy Star"
Mismanagement at it’s finest.
Bynum’s injury history isn’t a secret. He’s played less than ten games in the last two years and when he does get a chance on the court, injuries curb-side any chance of a proper return. So Indiana not checking his body, especially after injuries forced Bynum to sit during his short tenure with the Cleveland Cavaliers, was a huge mistake. It may have allowed the club to save some pennies on the cap and avoid any chemistry issues that came once Bynum joined the Pacers.
Now with Bynum away from the team for the remainder of the playoffs, getting an early jump on free agency, Larry Bird and company won’t have to worry about the big man anymore. Maybe with the proverbial monkey off of his back, Roy Hibbert can get back to playing like a quality center instead of getting benched for Ian Mahinmi.
