With the 42nd overall pick in the second round of the 2014 NFL Draft on Friday, the Philadelphia Eagles took wide receiver Jordan Matthews out of Vanderbilt to hopefully fill the void left by the departure of DeSean Jackson.
Once Jackson was gone after the team cut him and he moved on to Washington, all signs pointed to the Eagles targeting a wide receiver out of this deep bunch, and that’s exactly what they did on Friday night.
While he might not be Jackson initially, there is no doubt that Matthews can turn into that down the road. In four years with the Commodores, Matthews caught 262 balls for over 3,700 yards and 24 touchdowns. Last year alone he had one of the more prolific years in school history with over 1,400 of those total yards coming during the 2013 campaign.
This was a fantastic pick by the Eagles and Matthews should not only see the field immediately come September, but he should flourish under the Chip Kelly offensive scheme with the way it just seems to get guys open in space.
