Oakland Athletics recall Fernando Rodriguez
By David Miniel
The Oakland Athletics started the 2014 campaign without two of their top pitchers in the starting rotation. They lost both A.J. Griffin and Jarrod Parker, key pieces in their pitching staff.
A.J. Griffin will be sidelined for awhile, and Parker will miss the entire 2014 season after undergoing Tommy John surgery. So it’s safe to say that the Athletics have been trying to find the right combination when it comes to their arms.
With that being said, the Athletics have optioned right-hander Dan Straily to Triple-A Sacramento. Straily looked as if he had some potential but will be booted from the rotation after posting a somewhat awful 4.93 ERA. It’s not that bad, but something that Oakland isn’t looking for.
Righty Ryan Cook was placed on the 15-day disabled list with a right forearm straight. The results of the MRI have yet to come back, so there’s no official word on how severe the injury actually is. But it appears that the Athletics will put him aside for a couple weeks to allow him to recover. This is his second stint on the disabled list this season.
With Straily heading back down to the farm and Cook being tossed on the disabled list, the Athletics have recalled Fernando Rodriguez. Rodriguez made 11 solid relief appearances with the Triple-A Sacramento affiliate and posted a beautiful 0.73 ERA.
Athletics have also recalled lefty Joe Savery from Triple-A Sacramento. Savery put up a 3.86 ERA over 11 and two-third innings of relief for Sacramento.
