The 2014 World Cup is right around the corner and players are making the transition from their club teams to their international squads in preparation. For Liverpool striker Luis Suarez that means turning his focus on leading his Uruguayan team in a tough Group D that also features England, Italy and Costa Rica. Suarez thinks that Uruguay can get past England, which is led by his club captain Steven Gerrard.

“I think they have very good players that are in form and that are part of the big teams”, Suarez was quoted by Perform, via Sky Sports.

“Most of the players come from the big names of the Premier League and that means a lot.

“But we also know that they have some troubles and we know we can hurt them.”

Suarez won the Premier League’s Golden Boot Award after scoring 31 goals, and shared the same European honor with Cristiano Ronaldo. If Suarez’s form continues into the World Cup he could be a handful for the teams Uruguay will face, and Gerrard had a lot of praise for his Liverpool teammate after the season and ahead of the tournament.

“I’ve been privileged to play alongside some great players during my years at Liverpool but nobody comes close to Luis,” Gerrard said, via the Daily Mail.

“He’s not only the best, he’s the best by some distance.

“We’ve all seen what he’s done this season with his goals and his all-round brilliance and I think it’s taken Luis on to a different level.

“Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo are the two best players in the world and have been for the last four or five years, but Luis is tucked right in there behind them now.”

For Uruguay, playing in Brazil means a lot. They won the 1950 World Cup when the tournament was held in Brazil.

“It is clear that Uruguay knows the meaning of a World Cup in Brazil,” Suarez said.

“It is more important because of what happened in the past but now we are living in the present.

“Brazil eliminated us in the Confederations Cup last year and it was not fair because I think we played better. But that’s football and sometimes despite playing a great game, you can’t always win.

“We realise that the World Cup in Brazil motivates us a lot because all the things that we have experienced in the past.”
