The Chicago Bears just went through a bit of a quarterback controversy this past season when Jay Cutler’s rule as the starter was threatened by Josh McCown and his stellar role as the backup quarterback when Cutler missed time due to injury. That controversy wont’ arise again though, even with Chicago drafting San Jose State quarterback David Fales in the sixth round of the NFL Draft.

Rather than feel pressured, Cutler is instead mentoring Fales and taking him under his wing at minicamp.

Per the Chicago Sun Times:

"During minicamp last weekend, Fales, a sixth-round pick from San Jose State, texted Cutler with questions about his mindset during the progressions of some plays and about the footwork he uses for some concepts. He also would tell Cutler how his days were going with Marc Trestman and quarterbacks coachMatt Cavanaugh."

This is great news for the Chicago Bears as it shows not only that Cutler is comfortable in his role as the starter and doesn’t feel threatened, but he’s being a team player in the way the Bears need. With Cutler passing down his knowledge, Chicago can grow their backup quarterback of the future a lot quicker than they otherwise would and that’s always a good thing.

We saw how important McCown was to the Bears in 2013 and what his skills did to keep Chicago on track. That was with over years of experience under his belt and Fales comes in with none whatsoever at the pro level. Cutler’s mentorship not only yeps Fales and the Bears but also gives Cuter an ear on the sideline and an extra brain to pick when trying to correct mistakes and figure out defenses.
