Give this New York Jets fan credit for his dedication to the team’s good name. Misguided though his efforts might have been, his heart was in the right place…I think.

This week Jake Hendrickson won Mark Sanchez‘s jersey from the infamous ‘butt fumble’ play at an NFL Auction with a bid of $820. While the list of ways in which a person could better spend $820 might literally be endless, Hendrickson says he bought the jersey to make sure it did not get in the hands of a non-Jets fan. Here is the explanation (from Yahoo! sports):
"“The second I realized what it was I knew I had to have it. Almost for macabre reasons; the amount of ridicule I have received from friends regarding that play and me being a diehard Jets fan out in California especially. There’s no way I could let it get in the hands of an anti-fan or something of that manner to be shoved in our face.”"
First of all, serious props to Hendrickson for his word choice. Macabre? That’s no joke.
Secondly, while I appreciate his efforts to minimize the ridicule and shame directed at his beloved team because of a single play by a now-former quarterback, I am afraid that ship sailed long ago. Even with Sanchez now a member of the Philadelphia Eagles, the jokes about the butt fumble will remain plentiful for the foreseeable future.
