Noah Syndergaard has been placed on the disabled list with an elbow injury. This is a troubling development, of course, because the Mets will have to wonder if they are going to be the latest team to lose a young pitcher to Tommy John surgery.

More from MLB

Here is the latest on Syndergaard, a top pitching prospect and one of the key pieces in the trade that sent R.A. Dickey from New York to the Toronto Blue Jays. From Adam Rubin of ESPN New York:

"“Top pitching prospect Noah Syndergaard has been placed on the disabled list and will be dispatched to New York for an examination with team doctors after being diagnosed with a flexor pronator strain in his right elbow. The injury can be a precursor to Tommy John surgery, but the Mets portrayed the injury as “mild” and not overly concerning.”"

Syndergaard was off to a decent start in Triple-A so far this season. In 10 starts he is 5-2 with a 4.02 ERA and a 9.6 K/9. He has fought some command issues, with his BB/9 mark up to 3.2 after sitting around the 2.0 mark for most of his career.

This certainly was not the setback that the Mets wanted to see with Syndergaard, one of a number of top pitching prospects in their system. As with every team in a similar situation, they will hope that they caught this injury early enough and shut him down to avoid a one-year interruption in his development.

This would be a horrible break for the Mets, especially given the trade that brought Syndergaard to the franchise. Hopefully for them this injury is actually minor.
