The Tampa Bay Buccaneers are a team that is starting to rebound in wake of the Greg Schiano era finally being over and while they’ve played a grand total of zero games under new head coach Lovie Smith, already the team appears to be better than it was i 2013.

One of the bright spots in an otherwise abysmal campaign last year was defensive tackle Gerald McCoy who went to the Pro Bowl and once again made himself known as a dominant force in the middle of the Bucs defensive line. But while he has been great for the Bucs, it’s coming time to talk about a new contract and fans will be following that situation closely as to make sure an extension indeed happens.
McCoy isn’t fretting though and is actually taking an approach that both Bucs fans and members of the front office can appreciate. According to Matt Baker of the Tampa Bay Times, McCoy isn’t really all that worried about a new contract at this time and is more focusing on getting fit into the Tampa 2 returning to the Bucs.
This is great news for Bucs fans who were hoping to avoid an ugly situation in which McCoy holds out for a new deal or goes the Ndamukong Suh route and casts doubt over his future with the team in general. McCoy has no reason to rush an extension as he’s never played for Lovie Smith before and still needs to feel the situation out.
Chances are, a deal will indeed get done rather soon but McCoy isn’t fretting and that’s something the front office will be happy to hear.
