It doesn’t seem like that long ago that professional golfer Rory McIlroy and professional tennis player / girlfriend Caroline Wozniacki were kissing very publicly on the course at The Masters Par 3 Contest, when she served as a caddy for McIlroy. That’s because it was less than two months ago, and a lot has changed since then.

More from Golf

For starters, McIlroy and Wozniacki are no longer an item. Things happen and couples break up all the time, but what makes this interesting is how the couple who were engaged, comprised of two notable athletes in their sport, ended their relationship.

McIlroy seems to be the one behind the decision to end the relationship, and for as loved as he is in the golfing community he is about to get some bad press because of the alleged way that he broke up with Wozniacki.

From Neil Harman of London’s The Times:

"“[…] The last time he called, less than a day after telling her how much he loved her, it was a three-minute conversation she thought was a joke.”"

That is right, McIlroy called her up and dumped her in under three minutes, on the phone. Christopher Clarey of The New York Times verified the phone part of the equation while not putting a timestamp on it.

Wozniacki admitted to being shocked and caught off guard by the split.

“You’re not prepared for something like this, and it came as a bit of a shock,” Wozniacki said, via Clarey of The New York Times. “I just tried to prepare the best that I could and really tried to focus on my match and on what I had to do out there.”

Wozniacki is struggling post-break up and lost to Yanina Wickmayer at the French Open. On the other hand, McIlroy is playing better winning the European Tour’s flagship event, the BMW PGA Championship, in Virginia Water, England, on Sunday.

Looks like karma has yet to balance out the universe yet.
