Cain strained his right hamstring May 21 and hasn’t been in the starting rotation since. He was scratched from his last start, and now the Giants are opting for the 15-day disabled list for Cain to give the hamstring time to heal properly.
“We’re going to take the safe route here,” Giants manager Bruce Bochy said. “It’s a few more days to where we’d really be convinced he was 100 percent. We just at this point don’t think it’s worth the risk. We don’t want to put him in a situation where he’s at risk of re-injuring this.”
Yusmeiro Petit will replace Cain in the Giants rotation for a second straight time. A roster move was expected to be announced later Friday.
Cain is tentatively scheduled to come off the disabled list June 6 and should be available to make his start at the opener of a Giants homestand. According to Bochy, if Saturday’s game was taking place in September and not May, Cain would be toeing the rubber, but he didn’t want to take chances with an important starter with a large lead in the division this early on.
