Brock Holt had himself quite the day for the Boston Red Sox yesterday. The youngster–in his second year with the Sox after coming over from the Pittsburgh Pirates in a trade–was playing third base last night in place of the injured Will Middlebrooks.

First, he showed off his glove by making a very impressive diving stop to prevent a run for the Tampa Bay Rays.
With runners on first and third, and two outs in the top of the 2nd inning, Sean Rodriguez ripped one down the third base line.
It looked like a sure hit and possibly extra bases, but Holt had other ideas.
Diving to his right, Holt snared the bouncing ball.
Then he quickly sprang to feet and fired it over to first to rob Rodriguez and end the inning.
Holt wasn’t done making highlights after that, though. In the bottom of the third inning, he gave the Red Sox the lead with a 2-run homer–the first of his career.
With no outs, and Jonathan Herrera at first base, Holt took a pitch from Jake Odorizzi and turned on it, sending it flying out to right field. A solid contact hitter, Holt is hitting .305 on the season, but until last night had never put one out in his three seasons in the big leagues.
As he should have been, Holt was excited about the achievement, letting out a couple whoops as he made his way around the bases for the first time in his Major League career.
The Red Sox won the game, 7-1, to extend their winning streak to five games.
