There was a time when Drew Doughty could go wild in the adult playground that is Los Angeles, California and people would just wonder who that fit, bearded dude was chugging beers over in the corner, talking in a funny Canadian accent. Now, thanks to the wild success of the LA Kings since their 2012 Stanley Cup victory, anonymous beers at the pub have been replaced by free beers and throngs of admirers. As Doughty tells reporters, it’s not all good.

  • “It’s changed drastically,” Doughty said per Pro Hockey Talk. “I don’t know if I like it better or not. I for sure don’t like it better, actually. We’ll go out for dinner – the beards we all have don’t help – but back in the day we could just pretty much roll in anywhere, and there’s no way anyone would know who you were, no possible way. And now it seems like everywhere we do go, we are getting recognized.”

That’s what happens when you win and keep winning in a city as big as LA. Eventually, someone’s going to take notice, even if you’re just winning at hockey. The Kings are running through their best, most successful stretch in franchise history, so it should be no surprise that the team and its best players are finding celebrity status.

Everyone loves a winner, and the way the Kings have been winning this year has made believers out of even the most stone hearted observers.

The Los Angeles Kings host the New York Rangers tonight for Game 1 of the Stanley Cup Finals at 8PM EST. You can watch the game on NBC.
