Additionally with the release of Watch Dogs, an art book was released as well. It’s called The Art of Watch Dogs, as this book was published by Titan Books.
The art book gives people an understanding of how Ubisoft wanted to shape the city of Chicago.
A foreword is given at the beginning of the book by Mathieu Leduc and Sidonie Weber, who were two of the Art Director’s for Watch Dogs.
Leduc says, “Being part of the Watch Dogs pack, and such a great team of talented artists, is as much an amazing challenge as it’s a gratifying experience. In essence, one of the most important elements we focused on while designing the visual style of Watch Dogs was to create a strong and constant element of surprise, to not only grab people’s attention, but to sustain it and imprint this feeling of astonishment on the player’s brain throughout.”
Weber mentions, “We played with contrasts and juxtaposition. We loved surprising player’s expectations by hiding cryptic messages within aesthetic environments. This art book is a shared testimony from amazingly talented and passionate artists. I was so lucky to share my days and the last four years with them.”
The book shows many drawings of Aiden, as the game was being developed, and poses an interesting question. How do you define a hero? Once you play Watch Dogs from beginning to end, you’ll understand why this question was asked.
The city of Chicago wasn’t selected by accident, it served a key purpose. It simply isn’t Chicago without its renowned meteorology, as Graphic Project Manager Jean-Francois Carrier explains “When we picked Chicago as our game location, its weather ‘identity’ was taken into account. The Great Lakes weather system is a uniquely windy. Setting the game in autumn helped us in showing that particular weather – we can have sunny days along with rainy and stormy breaks.”
Aiden meets some rather interesting characters in his journey throughout Chicago, and book highlights them in various pictures. It’s one thing seeing them in the game, but another element is added when you understand why they look a certain way.
The people play a big role in Watch Dogs, but so does the city of Chicago. The art book shows how the city looks in various lights, and there are also some iconic buildings highlighted as well.
Another great feature of book is that it gives readers some backstory about the hacktivist group known as DedSec. The artists in the game really got a chance to show off their freedom and creativity in their representation of this group, as the art book definitely highlights this.
If you enjoyed playing Watch Dogs, then this book will give a deeper appreciation of the time and care that went into this game.
