This offseason has seen a number of NBA teams call up Kentucky Wildcats head coach John Calipari with interest in seeing if he wants to coach their team. The Los Angeles Lakers and New York Knicks have both been rumored as lusting after Calipari, but they’re going to have to bury those feelings for a long time following Kentucky’s new deal with their head coach.

More from Mens Basketball

Calipari signed a fat contract extension with the Wildcats on Thursday afternoon which will see his contract with the school run through 2021. Usually this is a mundane detail as college coaches tend to leave their contracts whenever they want but this deal is a bit different.

According to Adam Zagoria, Calipari’s new deal with the Wildcats has no buyout clause which means the only way out of the contract is to be fired or to re-sign in which case Calipari wouldn’t receive the remaining money on his deal.

This sort of cover the Wildcats in case the NBA comes calling again and it could also mean that Calipari stuck in Kentucky until 2021, which may end up being a good thing for not only the consistency of the school’s program but for players the school is looking to recruit.

Not that Kentucky isn’t already a basketball mecca, but knowing that Calipari could be around for a while is an encouraging thing for fans. It’s a pretty big deal for Calipari’s contract to be structured this way and only time will tell who benefited more from having no buyout in the new deal.

Either way, Calipari seems committed to Kentucky and fans are hoping he’ll be staying around for a long time.
