Rams head coach Jeff Fisher seems to want an attitude change in St. Louis, and he brought in Greg Williams to perform that reshaping. The Rams’ defense improved greatly last season and finished with the ninth best yards allowed per game; but they will have to continue to improve if they want to become challengers in the AFC West, which is quickly becoming one of the most talent-crowded conferences in football.

More from Los Angeles Rams

According to the team’s website, the change in the team’s defensive room has been palpable over the past couple weeks. “He’s the main voice in the room,” Fisher said. “He can coach every single position. You can see the change. You can see the energy. I’ve had to back him down just a little bit.”

Williams’ reputation precedes him in two ways. On one hand, he was a well respected coach that helped raise the Saints level of defensive play to new heights. On the other hand, he is best known for his role in the Saints bounty case.

While the Rams were not particularly active in free agency, they took six defensive players in the 2014 NFL Draft. The team has made defense a clear emphasis. First-round selection Aaron Donald is, perhaps, the most talent defensive tackle and was the first taken in the draft. And of course, Michael Sam, SEC Defensive Player of the Year, was the Rams seventh round selection. The new, young talent in the rookie pool should bring coachability and adaptability in bringing forth the change that Fisher desires.
